Clint Bowyer Takes First Chase Race at New Hampshire
Filed under: Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Jamie McMurray, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
Clint Bowyer grabbed his first victory of the season in the Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sunday when Tony Stewart ran out of gas with two laps to go after dominating the later stages of the race.It wasn't a surprise victory, as Bowyer had dominated the first part of the race and led 177 of the 300 laps overall.
But it was Stewart who led most of the final 100 laps, surviving a brief epidemic of yellow flags only to come up two miles short on fuel.
Stewart finished 24th, coasting ever-so-slowly across the finish line to complete the last of the 300 laps as Bowyer started his burnout not six car lengths behind him (right).
"I think I ran me out of fuel," a philosophical Stewart said after the race. "The guys are saying sorry for running me out of fuel, but I think I ran me out of fuel."
Denny Hamlin, victimized by a bump and a spin in one of the yellows, clawed back from 22nd place with less than 100 laps to go to finish second. Jamie McMurray was third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Finishing fifth was Kevin Harvick, who also had a subpar day until the very end.
Hamlin now leads the Sprint Cup Chase points, with Bowyer jumping from 12th to second, 35 points behind. Harvick is third, 45 points behind.

Jimmie Johnson's Drive for Five Gets Boost With Dover Victory
Filed under: A.J. Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Jimmie Johnson, Sprint Cup, Richard Childress Racing , NASCAR
DOVER, Del. -- Jimmie Johnson, like most of the rest of the drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, moved a spot closer to the front after NASCAR came down hard on Clint Bowyer last week. The four-time defending Cup champ shifted further toward the head of the class as he won the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway on Sunday from the pole, finishing 2.637 seconds ahead of Jeff Burton. Johnson's sixth victory of the season advanced the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet four spots in the Chase to second, 35 points behind leader Denny Hamlin.
It was Johnson's sixth victory at Dover, the most among active drivers, and a record 13th for team owner Rick Hendrick. But Johnson's 53rd Cup win preceded one his most muted celebrations, even as his newborn daughter, Genevieve, made her victory circle debut.
"I don't know how to describe it," Johnson said. Today was a big victory, hopefully a step towards the championship, but it's not the prize we want.. ... At the end of the year, if we're fortunate to win the championship, I'll be the guy with the biggest smile, be the guy that's hungover more than anyone come Monday morning."
Bowyer's rough run since his victory last Sunday in New Hampshire continued. He clipped the wall on Lap 158 and was forced to take a drive-through penalty for speeding on pit lane en route to a 25th-place finish, the lowest among the 12 Chase drivers.
That further dimmed Bowyer's title hopes. He was already docked 150 championship points by NASCAR on Wednesday after the car he won with last weekend failed inspection, a penalty that dropped him from second to 12th in points. He left Sunday's race 235 points behind Hamlin.

Spotter's Stand: Setbacks Can't Slow Dale Earnhardt Jr. From Top Five

For the first time all season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a top-five finish that didn't come at a restrictor plate track. For that matter, it didn't come at Daytona.Earnhardt weathered two significant setbacks during the course of Sunday's 300-miler at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and avoided other trouble (such as the spinning Denny Hamlin at right) to manage a fourth-place finish, his best since the same result at Daytona in July.
"We had the jack stop break and had to go to the back and then a miscommunication with the No. 78 (Regan Smith) on pit road that cost us a half of a lap under green. . . just battling back from that stuff," Earnhardt said. "Track position was what we needed at the end. We didn't have it."
Earnhardt started 32nd after a slow qualifying run Friday at the one-mile oval, but by the checkered flag he had completed some 68 green flag passes. The No. 88 was scored inside the top 15 for 245 of the 300 laps.

For Denny Hamlin, Dover Confrontation a 'Learning Lesson'
Filed under: Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR Awards, NASCAR Fights, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
DOVER, Del. -- Denny Hamlin wasn't continuously nudged by any Richard Childress Racing cars Sunday, although his status as the leader in the Chase for the Sprint Cup took a few dings.Hamlin's repaired No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota finished without any new dents -- at least ones put there by Kevin Harvick, who rammed Hamlin multiple times in practice on Saturday before the two exchanged words in the garage.
Hamlin said after his ninth-place finish in the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway on Sunday that those sorts of theatrics were over.
"It is on my part," said Hamlin, whose championship lead was cut to 35 points by race-winner Jimmie Johnson. "All we care about is getting top 5's and top 10's from here on out, and to win some at tracks where we know we can win. For me, the important part is that we move on from this (and use it) as a learning lesson."

Lamborghini releases fourth teaser ahead of Paris debut
Filed under: Performance, Paris Motor Show, Lamborghini, Luxury
We're only a few short days away from the 2010 Paris Motor Show and of all the automakers teasing their showgoing concepts and debuts, perhaps none have been as elusive as Lamborghini. After releasing three teaser images of its forthcoming Paris reveal, Automobili Lamborghini has just sent out this fourth shadowy image, hinting at what we'll be seeing in just a couple of days. Enough already.
Originally, we thought Lambo was simply teasing its new Jota supercar - the replacement for the aging Murciélago. However, further reports indicated that Lamborghini would be unveiling two new cars in Paris: the Jota, as well as a mystery car only known internally as "83X." To add to the confusion, a later report from Auto Guide stated that we wouldn't be seeing the highly anticipated Jota. Instead, a new technology concept would take the stage, crushing our highest hopes of some supercar hotness.
At this point, we're crossing our arms and tapping our feet out of impatience. Whatever Lamborghini has in store for the Paris show, we'll know for certain before the week's end. Have a look through our gallery below to see all of the Raging Bull teasers.

203-mph Suzuki Kizashi stops by for coffee
Filed under: Motorsports, Sedan, Performance, Suzuki, Racing
Remember that500+-horsepower Suzuki Kizashi that recently went over 200 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats? The one that Road & Track's Sam Mitani drove to a new F/BGC record of 203.720? Well, R&T brought it down to Cars and Coffee this weekend and we got our first up-close look at it. Color us impressed.
The exterior features a large air dam up front, Moon discs and a pair of dorsal ridges running along the roof, but other than that, the car looks pretty much stock. Sure it sits a bit lower and it is covered in decals, but it doesn't look much different from a tuner Suzuki that one might see at this weekly show. Even the engine looks relatively streetable.
Looking inside, you see much of the same - a fairly stock dash and center console, the original door panels, and even the stock steering wheel, albeit with the airbag removed. The biggest mods inside are for safety, with a single racing seat and a roll cage, plus a couple of fire-suppression tanks and a slew of switches and levers to keep everything moving smoothly. The biggest tip-off that this is something a little more special than just a tuner Kizashi is that giant parachute out back. Click below to check out our high-res gallery.

Richard Childress Racing to Appeal NASCAR Penalty, Blames Wrecker
Filed under: Clint Bowyer, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Richard Childress Racing, NASCAR
How could they have been so stupid? That's the $64 million question as to why a NASCAR championship team would try to cheat or modify its car in the opening round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs after NASCAR had already warned it was perilously close to being illegal only a week earlier.
That team's owner and namesake, Richard Childress, has a simple answer: last week's winning No. 33 Cheerio's Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer was absolutely legal.
The legendary team owner says there was no cheating and he will appeal a slew of penalties and fines issued Wednesday, including a six-race suspension of the team's crew chief, Shane Wilson, and car chief, Chad Haney, and the equally painful 150-point penalty Bowyer has been issued in the championship standings.
The points penalty dropped Bowyer from second place in the standings to 12th among the 12-driver championship field with the second race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs set for Sunday in Dover, Del.
Childress insisted that Bowyer's car didn't fail the height requirements because of crafty work by the team trying to gain an edge on the competition. He has a far less sinister explanation.
"We feel certain that the cause of the car being out of tolerance by sixty-thousandths of an inch -- less than one-sixteenth of an inch -- happened as a result of the wrecker hitting the rear bumper when it pushed the car into winner's circle,'' Childress said in a statement released Wednesday.

Helio Castroneves Wins Motegi IndyCar Pole
Filed under: IRL
MOTEGI, Japan (AP) -- Brazilian Helio Castroneves claimed the pole position for the Indy Japan as Team Penske drivers dominated Saturday's qualifying session.Castroneves' lap average of 201.992 mph put him ahead of Ryan Briscoe while series points leader Will Power qualified third as Team Penske took the top three positions.
"I'm very excited the three of us are starting in the top three spots," Castroneves said. "Hopefully, tomorrow we'll finish like this. It was a great effort for the entire team."
Power, who is making his debut at the 2.4 kilometer (1.5 mile) Twin Ring Motegi, holds a 17-point lead over defending series champion Dario Franchitti with two races left and could wrap up the title with a win.
"My goal was to come here and be ahead of the Ganassi guys, especially Dario," Power said. "I've just got to follow these guys tomorrow and keep Dario behind me."

Is Daimler interested in buying Fiat's Iveco truck ops?
Filed under: Truck, Europe, Work, Earnings/Financials, Fiat, Rumormill
Although many suspect that Daimler wants to buy Iveco from Fiat Industrial S.p.A., the German automaker denies it is angling to purchase the commercial division. According to The New York Times, there were supposedly talks during the summer about Daimler purchasing the "non-car business" - we're not sure if that means the agricultural and the truck side - but apparently the two sides couldn't agree on a price.
Daimler is the largest of players in the heavy truck industry - its various brands being among the market leaders on at least three continents. Outside opinion is that the German firm wants Iveco in order to help it penetrate Asia, where its current offerings are priced out of the mass-market competition. If nothing else, it's being suggested that Daimler might try to work out some sort of partnership agreement with Iveco. Doing so could help keep integration costs way down and avert the scrutiny of anti-trust authorities. Fiat hasn't commented on the matter, but this kind of tie-up is perhaps exactly what Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne had in mind when he split the company in two.

Bowyer Penalty Costs Him, Team 150 Points After Car Fails Inspection
Filed under: Clint Bowyer, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Richard Childress Racing, NASCAR
NASCAR has docked championship contender Clint Bowyer and his team owner Richard Childress 150 championship points and suspended Bowyer's crew chief Shane Wilson and car chief Chad Haney for six races after the No. 33 Cheerios Chevrolet failed post-race inspection following its victory Sunday in New Hampshire.Bowyer's penalty of 150 driver points drops him from second in the Sprint Cup Series championship to 12th among the 12-drive Chase contingent. However, he will get to keep the win in the Chase for the Sprint Cup opener -- his first victory in two years.
In addition to their suspensions Wilson and Haney have been fined $150,000 each. They, along with Bowyer, are on probation until Dec. 31.
"The team was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4 (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20-3 (car body location specifications in reference to the certified chassis did not meet NASCAR-approved specifications) of the 2010 Rule Book," NASCAR said Wednesday.
In a statement, team owner Richard Childress said the car was legal and that he would appeal the penalties to the fullest extent possible.
